Zinfandel of the Month – 2016 Bedrock Wine Co. Zinfandel Old Vine

Zinfandel of the Month is a regular feature on Zinfandel Chronicles. Keep in mind that although the Zinfandel of the Month might be an older bottle, the current vintage will be one you can find at retail or via the mailing list.

The November Zinfandel of the Month is the 2016 Bedrock Wine Co. Zinfandel Old Vine.

Bedrock Wine Co. was founded by Morgan Twain-Peterson in 2007 and focuses on small production wines from many of California’ s most treasured and historic vineyards. The lineup of wines at Bedrock is expanding rapidly, but I think the best of the best are the ancient vineyard Zinfandels, Morgan is clearly passionate about.

In order of percentage, this version of Old Vines comes from Bedrock Vineyard, Teldeschi Ranch, Sodini Ranch, Nervo Ranch, Katushas, Evangelho, Esola, Casa Santinamaria, and Story Vineyard. It is about 88% Zinfandel blended with Petite Sirah, Carignan, Alicante Bouschet and other varietals.

Bright red in color. 14.4% ABV. Pretty nose of brambly black and blue fruits, flowers and baking spices. Medium body with mouth watering acidity. Rich, silky Claret style Zinfandel. Black cherry, boysenberry and pepper on the palate. The finish is long with dusty tannins. Really delicious and just a screaming value at $20 per bottle. Best over the next several years.

My rating: 91 points.

I chose the 2016 Bedrock Old Vine as the 2017 version was released just a month ago and should be available at select retail locations.

The mailing list at Bedrock is highly recommended. Exceptional wines, fair prices and great customer service. Put your name on the waiting list.
