2016 Sobon Estate Old Vine Zinfandel Amador County – Bottle Notes

The Sobon Estate winery started in 1989 when Leon and Shirley Sobon bought each other a second winery for their 30th wedding anniversary present. They purchased the historic D’Agostini Winery, one of the oldest in the state. This winery has been designated as California State Historic Landmark #762. This site was chosen not only for its historical winery, but also for its vineyards and vineyard land. The old vine Zinfandel was retained, and the other vineyards replanted with the best varieties and clones.

Light red in color. 14.5% ABV. Brooding nose of black fruits, black tea and earthy loam. Light to medium body with medium acidity. This Claret style Zinfandel is best on the palate with flavors of black cherry, raspberry, cocoa and black pepper. The finish is long and plush. Not quite as good as last years version but easy to drink nonetheless. Best over the next couple years.

My rating: 87 points.

Year in and year out this wine fares well in the sub $15 Zinfandel category. Look for the 2015 that is likely still available at retail.
