A Wine Tasting for Ovarian Cancer Research

Lisa Dawson

My wife, Lisa Dawson, is running the 2012 ING New York City Marathon on November 4th with Fred’s Team, raising funds for crucial ovarian cancer research. Last weekend she put together a wine tasting fundraiser at Alki Arts, a fantastic little art gallery across from Alki Beach.

We poured wines from three of our favorite local wineries: 2011 Alexandria Nicole a squared Rosé, 2011 DiStefano Sauvignon Blanc and 2009 Efeste Final Final. Attendees purchased tickets to win a chance at one of the bottles tasted, plus a bottle of 2002 Leonetti Cabernet Sauvignon pulled from our cellar.

All of the wines were a big hit with the attendees, and the wineries are definitely worth a visit when in Woodinville. Some quick thoughts on each:

  • 2011 Alexandria Nicloe a squared Rosé  – 96% Pinot Gris with a touch of Syrah and Mourvedre. Dry in style. Watermelon, strawberry and jolly rancher. This will have a place on my back porch next summer. $12 at the winery. My rating: 88 points.
  • 2011 Distefano Sauvignon Blanc – A longtime favorite Washington Sauvignon Blanc. Lemon, grass, pineapple, lime and a hint of a oak. $16 at the winery and a case purchase in our household. My rating: 89 points.
  • 2009 Efeste Final Final – A blend of 58% Syrah and 42% Cabernet Sauvignon. Opaque purple in color. Mocha, mint, cherry and blackberry. This wine is just a baby. $27 at the winery. My rating: 90 points.

Wine has such a great way of pulling people together for worthy causes! The event was well attended and a good deal of money was raised. We lost a good friend to ovarian cancer last year and would love your support in fighting this awful disease.
