2011 Carlisle Zinfandel Saitone Ranch – Bottle Notes

Carlisle Winery & Vineyards was founded in 1998 by Mike and Kendall Officer. Their passion is clear: Small lots of Zinfandel and Syrah from exceptional, historic vineyards. Many of these vineyards are heritage sites planted by Italian immigrants and date back to the late 1800s . They have also recently added their first whites, two blends from historic, old-vine vineyards plus Sonoma County’s first ever Grüner Veltliner.

Saitone Ranch is situated in the Russian River Valley on the east side of the Laguna de Santa Rosa flood plain and was planted in 1895.

Maroon in color. 15% ABV. Stunning nose of red and blue fruits, licorice and a hint of peach. Medium body with mouth watering acidity. Exceptional balance and tremendous purity of fruit. Raspberry liqueur, blueberries and pepper on the palate. The finish is long, plush and spicy. This was the first vintage of Saitone Ranch from Mike Officer. What a treat! Drink over the next 2-3 years.

My rating: 94 points.

Current vintages of the various Carlisle wines are available via the mailing list, which is exceptionally long. Several retail outlets in California stock Carlisle, but you need to check with them at the time the winery releases their wines in the Spring and Fall.

I’ve wrote about Carlisle previously in Winery Mailing Lists: The Fab 5 and The 2016 Zinfandel Chronicles Power Rankings.

2011 Bedrock Wine Co. Zinfandel Saitone Ranch – Bottle Notes

Bedrock Wine Co. was founded by Morgan Twain-Peterson in 2007 and focuses on small production wines from many of California’ s most treasured and historic vineyards. The lineup of wines at Bedrock is expanding rapidly, but I think the best of the best are the ancient vineyard Zinfandels, Morgan is clearly passionate about.

Saitone Ranch is the oldest of the old-vine vineyards remaining in the Piner-Olivet area. Still owned by the Saitone family today, it is thought that the vines were in the ground and growing as early as 1895. Several blocks of Carignane, Zinfandel, Alicante Bouschet, and Chasselas Doré comprise the bulk of the remaining 17 acres. It is worth noting that perhaps my favorite old vine vineyard, Papera Ranch, is just down the street.

Purple in color. 15% ABV. Great big nose of black and blue fruits, flowers and a hint of citrus. Medium body with mouth watering acidity. Brambly blackberry, blueberry liqueur, slate and orange peel on the palate. The wine lingers on the finish. Another winner from Bedrock in the 2011 vintage. Drink over the next 2-4 years.

My rating: 93 points.

The mailing at Bedrock is highly recommended. Exceptional wines, fair prices and great customer service. Put your name on the waiting list.

I blogged about Bedrock recently in The 2016 Zinfandel Chronicles Power Rankings.
