2013 Bedrock Wine Co. Oakville Farmhouse Heritage – Bottle Notes

Bedrock Wine Co. was founded by Morgan Twain-Peterson in 2007 and focuses on small production wines from many of California’ s most treasured and historic vineyards. The lineup of wines at Bedrock is expanding rapidly, but I think the best of the best are the ancient vineyard Zinfandels, Morgan is clearly passionate about.

The tiny Oakville Farmhouse, planted in the 1930s, is the oldest remaining vineyard in the appellation. Located not far from Harlan and To-Kalon the diverse vineyard is a remnant of a long ago Napa Valley. The vineyard is planted to an array of varieties including Negrette, Mondeuse, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Carignan, Colombard, Chenin Blanc, Semillon, Malvasia Bianca and more.

Jet black in color. 14.5% ABV. Negrette, at 22%, is the largest portion of a single variety in this wine. Sublime nose of red and black fruits, mint, anise and pepper. Full bodied with mouth watering acidity. Dark fruited and made in a Claret style. So clearly a field blend as no particular variety jumps out of the glass. Black cherry, citrus, charcoal and black pepper on the palate. Tremendous length on the finish with gritty tannins. My first time trying this wine and it is hard not to be intrigued. It feels like 6-8 years from release is the right time to start drinking these.

My rating: 92 points.

The 2019 version of this wine will be released this Fall.

The mailing list at Bedrock is highly recommended. Exceptional wines, fair prices and great customer service. Put your name on the waiting list.
