Bottle Notes, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

2004 Domaine du Pégaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée – Bottle Notes

The 2004 Domaine du Pegau was the winning bottle in the May Installment of Pick My Next Bottle. I did not decant this wine and paired it with burgers, fries and a chopped salad. Not complicated but it worked brilliantly.

The family of Domaine du Pegau has roots in Châteauneuf-du-Pape dating back to the mid-17th century. The word Pegau refers to a wine jug discovered in the excavations of the 14th century Pope’s palace in Avignon. Today, the estate is run by the Paul Ferraud and his daughter Laurence.

Crimson in color. 14% ABV. Stunning nose of red fruits, garrigue, lavendar and leather. Medium body with exquisite acidity. Concentration and power that belies 16 years of bottle age. Clean and well balanced. Cherries, kirsch liqueur, spiced plums and pepper on the palate. Tremendous length on the finish. Rustic, yet fresh and absolutely delicious. Great CdP from an overlooked vintage. This wine will drink well for at least another 2-4 years.

My rating: 96 points.

Current vintages including the 2016 and 2017 can be found had for just about $80. Hard to go wrong with this iconic producer of CdP.
