Bottle Notes

2017 Syncline Mourvedre Heart of the Hill Vineyard – Bottle Notes

Syncline Winery was founded in 1999 by James and Poppie Mantone. Syncline’s first vintage in 1999, consisted of 76 cases of Celilo Vineyards Pinot Noir from vines planted in 1973. The next year, production was increased to include Columbia Valley Syrah and Grenache. At the same time they began working with vineyards to plant Mourvedre, Cinsault, Counoise and Carignan. They have kept production under 6,000 cases annually to ensure intimacy with each barrel and every vine.

From Heart of the Hill Vineyard on Red Mountain.

Crimson in color. 14% ABV. Savory nose of red fruits, crushed gravel, leather and flowers. Medium body with firm acidity. Concentrated with tart fruits. Dried cherries, cranberries, earth and minerals on the palate. The finish is long and supple. Approachable now but 2-4 years in the cellar would be beneficial. James Mantone is a master with Rhone varieties and this wine holds tremendous promise.

My rating: 91 points.

Syncline Winery is located along the Columbia River Gorge in Lyle, Washington. We usually visit Syncline in conjunction with a trip to Hood River, Oregon. Definitely worth a visit when you are in the area.
