2000 Pavie Macquin – Bottle Notes

The 2000 Pavie Macquin was the winning bottle in the November Installment of Pick My Next Bottle. The wine was decanted for 90 minutes and served with a homemade meat loaf.

Chateau Pavie-Macquin gets its name from Albert Macquin, its 19th century owner. His descendants, the Corre-Macquin family, still own the 37-acre estate, which is in the Right Bank appellation of Saint-Emilion. The estate’s vineyards are on the top of a plateau and are adjacent to the famous vineyards of Troplong Mondot and Pavie. The Winemaker is Nicolas Thienpont. Vineyards are planted to 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Robert Parker has written that “this estate…has become one of the stars of Saint-Emilion.” In the 2006 reclassification of Saint- Emilion Pavie Macquin was promoted to Premier Grand Cru.

Crimson in color with some bricking at the edge of the glass. 13.5% ABV. Breathtaking nose of black fruits, smoke, leather and roasted herbs. Medium to full bodied, rich, deep and concentrated. Sweet and lush fruit graces the palate. Flavors of black currants, cassis, plum and minerals. The finish is exceptionally long with pronounced, silky tannins. The wine is just now entering what should be a long drinking window. Just a wonderful reflection of the ’00 vintage with beautiful fruit and incredible structure. Drink over the next 6-10 years.

My rating: 95 points.

I am very tempted to buy the 2016 Pavie Macquin which is an absolute bargain at $90. I’ll need to do the math as it pertains to my age on whether I want to own a wine that needs 20 years in the cellar. If you are just beginning your Bordeaux collection then I would contend this wine is an absolute must.
