2016 Quivira Vineyards Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley – Bottle Notes

Quivira Vineyards is a leading producer of Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc and Rhône varieties, built upon intentional winegrowing and a thoughtful commitment to biodynamic standards and organic farming. Quivira was founded in 1981 by Holly and Henry Wendt, who were drawn to Dry Creek Valley’s unspoiled rural character and rich wine history. In 2006, Pete and Terri Kight purchased Quivira from the Wendts.

Purple in color. 14.5% ABV. Savory nose of brambly black fruits, anise and baking spices. Full bodied with juicy acidity. Initially this comes across as dark and brooding but after a little time some brighter fruit flavors emerge. Black cherry, black raspberry and pepper on the palate. The finish is long and spicy. Really good Zin and hard to go wrong for just a twenty dollar bill. Comparable to the Ravenswood Appellation wines and the Seghesio Sonoma Zinfandel. Best over the next 2-3 years.

My rating: 90 points.

Admittedly it has been forever since I last had a Zin from Quivira. I fondly remember visiting the winery frequently in the mid 1990’s. Just a great spot and worth checking out on your next excursion to the Dry Creek Valley.

  1. hey, Tom,
I’m reading you notes regularly and find them very interesting. Just wonder how many of these producers can be reached internationaly. I mean I have made some tries here in Tokyo but failed.
    Cheers

    1. Not my area of expertise but I would think some of the larger producers like Ravenswood, Ridge and Seghesio would be “easier” to source. Otherwise, I would check with top producers like Carlisle and Turley and see if they have an international shipping option for their mailing list.
