2014 Ravenswood Zinfandel Dickerson Vineyard – Bottle Notes

Ravenswood was founded in 1976 by Joel Peterson. The winery is a pioneer in producing single vineyard Zinfandels from some of Napa and Sonoma’s most treasured vineyards, including Dickerson, Old Hill, Cooke and Belloni. I used to visit Ravenswood in the summer, when they released their single vineyard wines. Back in the day they also served delicious barbecue on the deck out behind the winery. Great wine, great food and great memories.

Dickerson Vineyard is situated on Zinfandel Lane in Napa Valley and was planted in 1930. Trees have always been an important part of Dickerson vineyard. The eucalyptus at the north end of the property imparts an inarguable influence on the wine’s flavor.

Crimson in color. 14.9% ABV. Awesome nose of brambly black fruits, licorice and pepper. Full bodied with exquisite acidity. Richly textured and layered with tremendous mouthfeel. Blackberry, black cherry liqueur, cocoa and pepper on the palate. Tremendous length on the finish. Just an exceptional Zinfandel from a historic vineyard. Best over the next 2-4 years.

My rating: 94 points.

Ravenswood is widely available at retail the winery and via the mailing list. The ’15 version of Dickerson will set you back about $42.

  1. Nice and timely article, given the changes at Ravenswood. Dickerson Vineyard has held a special place in my heart for a long time. Dr. Dickerson was a kind and patient man,

        1. For me it was never quite the same after Joel sold to Constellation almost 20 years ago. Wasn’t aware the tasting room was closing though. That is just really unfortunate.
