2015 Carol Shelton Wines Old Vine Zinfandel Wild Thing – Bottle Notes

Carol Shelton Wines was founded in 2000 and is based out of an industrial park in the city of Santa Rosa. Prior to founding her own label Carol was the Winemaker and Windsor Vineyards for 19 years. Carol Shelton Wines has a focus on the Zinfandel variety.

Dark crimson in color. 14.5% ABV. Ripe red and black fruits, baking spices and pepper on the nose. Medium to full bodied with ample acidity. Modern in style with no shortage of plush, creamy fruits. Boysenberry, raspberry and a hint of pepper on the palate. Nice length on the finish. Smooth, supple and easy to drink. Best over the next several years.

My rating: 90 points.

I bought this wine after seeing high praise from Tim Fish for the 2016 version. He liked the more recent vintage more than I liked this wine. Regardless, this is a well made wine and worth searching out at the $18 price point.

  1. I also tried Carol Shelton’s zins after reading comments that she is the “queen of zin” and “zen of zin”. I have tried the 2016 Wild Thing, the 2016 Monga Zin, and the 2016 Pizazz Zin. I agree with you that the Wild Thing was good but I thought that the other two were better. I have to admit that the Monga Zin was everything I expect in a Zin and much more. It has a lot of personality and a mouthful of flavor without being overpowering. BTW, I also tried the Bucklin 2015 Bambino Hill Old Ranch Zinfandel that you rated a 95. Wine tasting is subjective, but I personally would reverse your ratings for the Monga Zin and Bucklin. I think that the Bucklin is closer to the 2016 Bogle Old Vine Zinfandel rated 87 by WS at around $9!
