Bottle Notes, Zinfandel

2012 Ravenswood Zinfandel Old Hill Ranch Vineyard – Bottle Notes

Ravenswood was founded in 1976 by Joel Peterson. The winery is a pioneer in producing single vineyard Zinfandels from some of Napa and Sonoma’s most treasured vineyards, including Dickerson, Old Hill, Cooke and Belloni. I used to visit Ravenswood in the summer, when they released their single vineyard wines. Back in the day they also served delicious barbecue on the deck out behind the winery. Great wine, great food and great memories.

Old Hill Ranch is an iconic vineyard.  It was founded by William McPherson Hill in 1851. The vineyard came into the Bucklin family when it was purchased in 1981. Bucklin, Bedrock and Ravenswood are the sole producers of wine from the vineyard

Purple in color. 15.2% ABV. Tremendous nose of brambly black fruits, anise and pepper. Full bodied with mouth watering acidity. Big in scale but still with a Claret style Zinfandel profile. Blackberry, black cherry, cocoa and pepper on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish. This Zinfandel showcases the historic Old Hill Ranch Vineyard in the best possible light. Drink over the next 3-5 years.

My rating: 95 points.

Ravenswood is widely available at retail the winery and via the mailing list. Look for current versions of Dickerson, Belloni or Old Hill.
