2013 Bedrock Wine Co. Heritage Wine Nervo Ranch – Bottle Notes

Bedrock Wine Co. was founded by Morgan Twain-Peterson in 2007 and focuses on small production wines from many of California’ s most treasured and historic vineyards. The lineup of wines at Bedrock is expanding rapidly, but I think the best of the best are the ancient vineyard Zinfandels, Morgan is clearly passionate about.

Nervo Ranch is situated south of Geyserville and is one of the most distinct vineyards in Sonoma County. Its oldest blocks are a unique patchwork of red and white varieties once used for the Nervo Winery’s “California Burgundy”. The vineyard is planted to Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Negrette, Alicante Bouschet, Carignan, Grenache, Grand Noir, Trousseau Noir, Valdigue, Abouriou, Semillon, Burger, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc amongst others.

Crimson in color. 14.5% ABV. Terrific nose of brambly blue and black fruits, anise and white pepper. Medium to full bodied with ample acidity. The palate is a bit muddled with flavors of black raspberry, licorice and mint. Medium length on the finish with chalky tannins. Perplexing Zinfandel that falls short of the excellence I expect from Bedrock. Drink soon.

My rating: 88 points.

The mailing list at Bedrock is highly recommended. Exceptional wines, fair prices and great customer service. Put your name on the waiting list.

  1. Totally agree with you buddy. By far my least favorite Bedrock ever. Note from April of this year below.

‘Easily the most un-interesting Bedrock I’ve ever had. Pretty much non existent on the nose, medium bodied with plenty of acidity, but little/no fruit on the palate and a bitter finish. I kept waiting for it to come around and offer some sort of pleasure, but it just didn’t happen. Saved a couple glasses for tomorrow but I’m definitely not holding my breath. Will put my last 3 bottles in the back of the cellar but I’m not confident more time will do this wine any favors. A super rare miss from Bedrock.’

    1. I seem to recall some misses in previous vintages as well but would have to check my notes. Like anything else I think you get better over time and Morgan is trending in the right direction.
