2014 Chateau Puech-Haut Saint-Drezery Cuvee Prestige – Bottle Notes

Chateau Puech Haut is in Saint-Drezery, a small village northeast of Montpellier. In Provence, a ‘Puech’ means a small hill. A ‘Puech Haut’ is a hill higher than the others. This wine comes from 60-70 year old vines and is a blend of 55% Grenache and 45% Syrah. Aged half in concrete and half in neutral barrel it is a special bottling made for Eric Solomon by Philippe Cambie for the US market.

Dark crimson in color. 15% ABV. Savory nose of black fruits, lavender and truffles. Full bodied with medium acidity. Big, rich and flamboyant. Black cherry, bacon fat, smoke and iodine on the palate. The finish is long with subtle tannins. Delicious wine. Drink over the next 5-7 years.

My rating: 91 points.

This wine is an unbelievable value at the $13 I paid at Costco. If I recall correctly I paid closer to $17 for previous vintages. Regardless, I’m tempted to go back for a case. We all need a wine to open on a Monday night and this wine absolutely fits the bill.
