Bottle Notes

New Releases from Stottle Winery

Stottle Winery was founded by Amy and Josh Stottlemyer. Josh has been winemaker from the start. Stottle offers a wide array of wines, including Barbera, Nebbiolo, Tempranillo, Viognier, Roussanne, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery sources its fruit from across the Yakima Valley, Horse Heaven Hills, and Columbia Valley appellations.

Amy recently sent me a set of new releases to sample.

2013 Stottle Viognier – Light gold in color. 14.5% ABV. Sourced from Elerding Vineyard. Pear, flowers and honeysuckle on the nose. Rich and creamy with zingy acidity. Peaches, pear and green apple on the palate. Delicious wine despite coming up a little short on the finish. $25 at the winery. My rating: 88 points.

2012 Stottle Tempranillo – Ruby red in color. 14.4% ABV. 100% Tempranillo from Elerding and Sugarloaf Vineyards. Red fruits, baking spice and earth on the nose. Medium body with medium acidity. Soft and plush on the palate. Flavors of Bing cherry, spice and cocoa. Ample tannins on a medium length finish. Drink over the next 2-4 years. Speaks for the potential of this grape in Washington. $30 at the winery. My rating: 89 points.

2012 Stottle Cabernet Sauvignon Doc Stewart Vineyard – Purple in color. 14.8% ABV. 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot and 2% Malbec. Great nose of red fruits, currants and graphite. Rich, concentrated fruit on the palate. Flavors of cherries, cassis and dark chocolate. Medium length on the finish. There is structure here to suggest this will benefit with 2-4 years in the cellar. $34 at the winery. My rating: 90 points.

2012 Stottle Big Eddie – Crimson in color. 14.8% ABV. 55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Malbec. Sourced from Elephant Mountain, Doc Stewart and Elerding 6 Prong Vineyards. Red fruits, cedar and tobacco on the nose. Medium body with nice acidity. Cherries, strawberries and pencil on the palate. Silky tannins on a medium length finish. Lots to like here. Drink over the next 3-5 years. $35 at the winery. My rating: 90 points.

2012 Stottle Malbec – Purple in color. 14.8% ABV. 100% Malbec from Elerding 6 Prong Vineyard. Powerful nose of dark fruit, nutmeg and anise. Beautiful structure and balance. Ripe plums, cassis and spice on the palate. There are chalky tannins on a long spicy finish. Nicely done. Drink over the next 2-4 years. $34 at the winery. My rating: 91 points.

2012 Stottle Hombre – Dark crimson in color. 14.6% ABV. 54% Tempranillo, 33% Malbec and 13% Mourvedre sourced from Elerding 6 Prong and Sugarload Vineyards. Dark fruits, smoke and pepper on the nose. Earth flavors with just enough acidity. Blackberry, black cherry and touch of oak on the palate. Medium length on the finish. Drink over the next 2-3 years. $32 at the winery. My rating: 89 points.

This was my first opportunity to taste through the Stottle wines. Across the board they are well made and fairly priced.

The winery is located in Lacey, WA and is open Wed-Sun from 12-6.
