2002 Domaine G. Roumier Chambolle-Musigny – Bottle Notes

2002 Roumier

Roumier is one of the most esteemed producers in all of Burgundy. Founded in 1924 by George Roumier, son Christophe began managing the the Domaine in 1982 and took over full control in 1990 upon retirement of his father. The winery produces a wide array of wines, ranging from the Chabolle-Musigny at $90 to the Bonne Mares, upwards of $1,000 per bottle for exceptional vintages.

2002 was a great vintage in the Côte de Nuits, but I’ve seen tasting notes to the effect that the Roumier Chambolle-Musigny was aging prematurely. Alarmed, as any consumer would be, I decided to pull the cork on one of my bottles.

The wine has a beautiful dark color. Sappy red fruits, pine resin, forest floor and spice. The finish on the wine lasts for almost a minute. The premature aging of this wine is greatly exaggerated – I have no doubt it will continue to evolve for another 5-7 years. I will wait at least a year before I open another bottle.

I’m far from throwing in the towel on Bordeaux and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but I see how all roads lead to Burgundy.

  1. Yes, all roads lead to Burgundy! Regarding the best time to open 2002 Burgundy, I’m waiting on most of my bottles. 15 years of aging seems to be a sweet spot for most 02 Premier Crus. 20 years a sweet spot for most 02 Grand Crus.

    1. Peter, your timeframe sounds about right. I had read a few reviews on Cellartracker that said the wine was peaking. Having tried it now I do not think that is the case.

  2. I suppose it all comes down to whether one prefers to drink wine young or well aged. With Burgundy I prefer the wine to be well aged with a lot of perfume on the nose and secondary characteristics on the palate. In contrast, I prefer California wine to be young and explosive on the palate.
